Trois cavaliers rentrent en Lotharingie, en automne 999, à la demande express de l'évêque de Metz, auxquels ils sont attachés. Guillaume neveu de l'évêque est accompagné d'Olderic, un guerrier saxon, et d'Albert, un moine étourdit. Ils vont parcourir tous ensemble la route des montagnes vosgiennes, où ils y découvriront une contrée isolée en proie à la peur. Des rumeurs courent : on parle de la fin du monde dans les villes et les campagnes. A cette époque, le clergé catholique peine à évincer les croyances populaires, toujours empreintes de magie.
