Résumé
Shemane, une ancienne prostituée de vingt-six ans, mène désormais une existence tranquille au fin fond de l’Oklahoma. Sa seule distraction est d’apporter un certain « réconfort » à Jurgen Schrenk, beau soldat allemand un peu naïf qui a l’habitude de s’évader du camp de prisonniers de guerre local. Il faut dire que dans le Middle West, la Seconde Guerre mondiale paraît bien lointaine. Carl Webster, marshal cool et un rien caustique, enquête sur la mort d’un autre prisonnier de guerre, vraisemblablement tué par un SS pur et dur dissimulé dans le camp et qui cherche à organiser des sabotages. Carl pense utiliser le brave Jurgen pour le démasquer, et compte donc sur l’aide de Shemane. Mais un tel calcul a quelque chose d’un peu trop simple, n’est-ce pas ? Connivence avec l’ennemi poursuit la « saga Carl Webster » entamée avec Le Kid de l’Oklahoma et Hitler’Day, et est accompagné de deux nouvelles qui reprennent des épisodes antérieurs.

Une écriture typiquement hard-boiled, précise, laconique et même souvent elliptique qui donne son rythme particulier à ce roman tendu à l’extrême. La brutalité du réel, une profonde réflexion sur le mal, l’échec et la corruption. Mais c’est aussi un roman dans lequel le protagoniste se demande avec angoisse qui est sa vraie famille : son père, ancien mercenaire au Vietnam, son épouse absente, sa fille fugueuse, ou bien ses collègues, voire les criminels qu’il côtoie ?

Les recherches piétinent, les policiers de la criminelle sont à cran, ils se perdent dans les détails. L'inspecteur principal Duncan McCormack est appelé pour auditer la désastreuse enquête, ce qui a le don d'irriter les membres de l'équipe qui ont déjà dû essuyer les railleries de la presse pour leur tentative vaine d'attraper le tueur en se mêlant à la foule des danseurs. Parallèlement on suit Alex Patton, un perceur de coffres-forts venu de Londres pour cambrioler une salle des ventes dans sa ville natale et dont l'histoire croise celle du tueur à mesure que l'intrigue se noue et que McCormack est impliqué dans les deux affaires.
