Alors qu'il fait des recherches généalogiques sur ses ancêtres écossais, Graeme Macrae Burnet découvre des archives relatives à une étrange affaire. En 1869, Roderick Macrae, dix-sept ans, a été arrêté après un triple assassinat dans un village isolé des Highlands. Dans un document écrit, le jeune homme relate sa vie et ses meurtres, sans jamais donner le moindre détail sur ses mobiles. Hormis ce récit, aucune preuve tangible de sa culpabilité n'a été trouvée. Était-il tout simplement fou ? Graeme Macrae Burnet nous livre toutes les pièces du procès : témoignages, articles de journaux, rapports des médecins. Peu à peu, le doute s'installe. Le récit de ces crimes est-il bien l'œuvre de ce jeune garçon, a priori illettré ? S'agit-il d'un faux ? Si c'est le cas, que s'est-il réellement passé? La solution semble se trouver dans la vie de cette petite communauté repliée sur elle-même, où chacun doit rester à sa place, sous peine de connaître les pires ennuis.
