Résumé
À Kingsmarkham, des jeunes filles disparaissent mystérieusement puis réapparaissent quelques jours plus tard. Droguées, elles ne peuvent donner aucune indication précise sur leur détention. Dans cette atmosphère d'angoisse générale, un détenu condamné pour pédophilie est remis en liberté, ce qui ne fait qu'accroître l'inquiétude des habitants de Kingsmarkham. Responsable de ces deux affaires, Wexford enquête dans la cité où s'est installé le pédophile et où habite l'une des jeunes filles enlevées. Très vite, les événements prennent un tour dramatique, et deux meurtres successifs sont commis... Sans dommage apparent, un pur " Wexford ", est du grand Ruth Rendell. Des jeunes filles disparaissent, puis reparaissent, droguées au Rohypnol. Un enfant est kidnappé. Meurtres, pédophilie, violences conjugales. Ecriture précise et suave, perversité parfaite. Ecrire l'amuse, elle ignore la page et la nuit blanches. Michel Grisolia, L'Express. Tout, dans le livre de cette baronne de l'Empire britannique, tend à rendre le suspense parfait : les portraits des protagonistes d'une sombre affaire de crimes pédophiles et de jeunes filles enlevées, la violence et la vérité des passions mises en scène, l'acuité du regard social. Fred BELIN excelle dans l'art de se glisser dans la peau de ce que nous regardons comme la pire des crapules. Il nous décrit un personnage banal, son humanité, sa sensibilité, ses joies et ses désarrois afin que nous puissions nous y identifier. Ainsi l'horreur que nous ressentions ne provient pas tant des crimes commis que de la proximité que nous éprouvons avec le criminel. Bonne lecture à tous.

Dans un parc londonien, la jeune Annabelle Hammond est découverte étranglée. Elle dirigeait son entreprise familiale spécialisée dans l'importation de thé. L'enquête est confiée à l'inspecteur principal Duncan Kincaid et à son adjointe, l'inspecteur Gemma James. Reginald Mortimer, le fiancé de la victime, leur apprend que celle-ci l'avait quitté après le dîner en empruntant un tunnel piétonnier. L'examen des bandes vidéo de surveillance du tunnel montre Annabelle et Gordon Finch, un musicien ambulant avec lequel il semble qu'elle ait eu une liaison. Il devient suspect mais ne sera pas le seul car la vie d'Annabelle comporte bien des secrets que les enquêteurs devront mettre à jour pour démasquer le coupable en plongeant dans le lointain passé des parents des personnages.
