Résumé

Face à un ennemi invisible qui semble avoir toutes les cartes en main, la vérité ne triomphe pas toujours de la mystification et il faut parfois savoir renoncer à certains principes pour assurer sa propre survie.

Ce commerce international remporte un succès d'autant plus important que Reiner a acheté toutes les personnalités influentes de ces pays corrompus. Lors d'un convoyage de marchandises par bateau depuis le Pakistan, le corps d'un enfant décapité est retrouvé parmi les lots de tapis. Reiner qui sent une menace peser sur ses affaires se rend sur place et fait la connaissance de Ram, l'un des gamins de la fabrique de Gwadar Kalat où les conditions de travail sont au-delà de l'imaginable. Ce meurtre est un signe adressé à ce "seigneur, roi lointain présidant aux destinées des troupes sombres aux doigts rapides". L'improbable rencontre de l'exploiteur et de l'enfant esclave va faire des étincelles. Ensemble, et bientôt rejoints par Agnès, la compagne de Max, ils vont mener une enquête, à travers les montagnes et les villages du Pakistan poursuivis par des tueurs à gages... au service d'un trafic encore plus impossible à imaginer.

Les deux policiers ont besoin de son aide pour analyser les nouveaux meurtres de celui que la presse a surnommé Charly. Malgré ses réticences, Julia coopère et s'aperçoit assez vite que ces crimes sont une copie conforme du modus operandi de Cordell.

Judy Hammer, chef de la police de l'État de Virginie, est confrontée aux "Pirates de la route", une bande de criminels défoncés qui agressent, volent et tuent en s'attaquant principalement aux camionneurs isolés. Pour tenter de rassurer la population tout en redorant le blason de la police, l'ex-journaliste Andy Brazil, devenu le bras droit de Judy, a créé un site Internet qui publie une série d'articles signés Officier Vérité. Cette initiative a été prise à l'insu du gouverneur Crimm, un vieil aristocrate myope et insupportable, bien loin des réalités quotidiennes de ses administrés. À telle enseigne qu'il lance le projet VASCAR instaurant sur Tanger Island un contrôle de vitesse des véhicules alors que dans cette île proche des côtes mais isolée du monde, les gens se déplacent dans des voiturettes de golf. Cette décision déclenche une émeute. Les insulaires réclament leur indépendance et prennent en otage le dentiste qui vient régulièrement du continent les soigner (très mal d'ailleurs). Pour ajouter un peu de piment, Unique, l'égérie des pirates de la route, entraîne sur l'île une lesbienne qu'elle assassine avant de graver sur son corps "Officier Vérité". Lâchés par tous, Judy Hammer et son fidèle Andy se doivent de réagir pour ramener le calme. Dans ce récit qui fustige des politiciens sans scrupule, on retrouve Judy Hammer déjà présente dans La Griffe du Sud . Le texte de Patricia Cornwell ne manque pas d'humour mais surprend cependant par quelques vulgarités

Wonderland avenue

Alors que Los Angeles fête joyeusement le premier de l'an 2002, Harry Bosch est confronté à deux suicides. Les choses ne vont guère en s'arrangeant car dans la même journée le policier doit rallier Wonderland Avenue où, sur la butte proche, un chien vient de déterrer un os humain. Son examen par le service compétent indique qu'il appartenait à un gamin mort depuis vingt ou vingt-cinq ans. Chargé de l'affaire, Bosch fait fouiller les environs où d'autres débris humains et des restes de vêtements sont retrouvés. L'examen du crâne et des os des bras et jambes, porteurs de multiples lésions, permettent aux enquêteurs de savoir que la victime était battue régulièrement. Elle avait même subi une trépanation à la suite d'une fracture du crâne et il semble évident qu'il y a eu assassinat. Grâce à ces détails, Bosch fait passer une annonce dans la presse pour tenter d'identifier qui était ce gamin. Une femme lui répond en affirmant qu'il s'agit de son petit frère disparu en 1980.

Avant qu'il ne soit trop tard

La capacité de nuisance d'un pirate informatique est sans limite. Surtout quand ce pirate est à la tête de SJR DataSystems, une des plus puissantes entreprises d'informatique des États-Unis, et qu'il emploie lui-même d'autres pirates capables d'envahir et de modifier les systèmes prétendus les mieux protégés. C'est ce que va apprendre l'inspecteur Susannah Figueroa de la police de Chicago, quand sa propre sœur Sheryl, employée de SJR, découvre que son entreprise peut tout savoir sur tout le monde, que certains de ses collègues ou supérieurs peuvent modifier jusqu'aux dossiers médicaux de n'importe qui et donc, potentiellement, tuer à distance. Parallèlement, un autre flic de Chicago, Jesus Delgado, se voit chargé de l'enquête sur le cadavre d'un policier repêché dans l'immense lac Michigan. Ses trouvailles l'amènent à s'intéresser lui aussi à SJR DataSystems. Figueroa et Delgado ne seront pas trop de deux pour tenter de déjouer un complot qui menace les plus hautes sphères politiques du pays mais aussi, surtout, leurs propres vies et celles de leurs proches...
